LiveWise is Asking YOU to be the Difference!

Parents: Talk to your children about the dangers and risks of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Kids who learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are up to 50% LESS likely to use drugs. Check out our resource links today, including timetotalk.org and click here for tips on how to start and continue the conversations.

Community Members: Get involved with LiveWise and other prevention partners to solve our local problems, and improve the health of our families and communities. Substance abuse is the SINGLE greatest preventable health problem in the United States. (Source: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)

Youth: Help LiveWise plan upcoming community events in order to talk about how the issues of drugs affect you personally at home, in school, and in your community. Find out how you can use your time constructively and make a difference to those around you. Educate yourself and know when to seek help for yourself or others around you. Click here for important information about Prescription Medications.

College Students: Check out www.collegealcoholprofile.com and compare your rates of alcohol use with that of your peers. Make sure you are fully educated, and that you share what you know about the social, legal, and health risks associated with high risk / binge drinking. Summer Safety

As you prepare to celebrate with your friends and family this holiday and throughout the rest of the summer, please remember the serious risks associated with alcohol use! Impaired driving is one of the most often committed and deadliest crimes. There is no safe level of drinking when it comes to operating motor vehicles. Buzzed driving is drunk driving. Legally, driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or above is illegal in Nebraska and all neighboring states.

For understanding more about BAC and how alcohol affects your body, check out the ABCs of BAC: Click Here

Be safe as you celebrate this holiday and summer- plan a safe way home before your festivities begin if applicable, and be heightened in your personal awareness as you are impacted daily by others' choices. Have a safe, memorable, and healthy 4th of July!

Celebrate Smoke-Free Omaha!

Posted June 17, 2008

Smoke-Free Air is Here! Omaha residents can now breathe easier thanks to changes to our smoke-free air law. Effective June 17, 2008, Omaha’s smoke-free air law covers all bars and restaurants, keno establishments, most tobacco retailers and Horseman’s Park. Most of these areas were previously exempt from the smoke-free ordinance, but by ruling of the Nebraska Supreme Court must now be smoke-free in Omaha. Thanks to these changes we can all breathe a little easier.

Now you can frequent and work in more places and breathe clean, smoke-free air. Please thank the businesses that you patronize for being smoke-free. We can all breathe a little easier thanks to these changes!

Get a copy of the revised law at: http://www.ci.omaha.ne.us/Smoking%20Ban%20Ordinance.pdf.

Still have questions? Contact Christine Stewart at the Douglas County Health Department, 402-444-7496 or via email.
