School and Family Enrichment  Program                    print

The School and Family Enrichment (SAFE) program is a collaborative effort between the Omaha Public Schools (OPS), Region 6 Professional Partner Program (PPP), Child Saving Institute (CSI), and Heartland Family Service (HFS). The intent of the program is to provide, at no cost to the family and on a voluntary basis, a liaison between the school, the family, and needed community resources through the services of a home-based SAFE Specialist.

Who can the SAFE Program assist?
The SAFE Program will assist parents and school staff with children who may be demonstrating these or other problematic behaviors:
 Unusual moodiness
 Easily distracted or inattentive
 Defiant/oppositional
 Unusually quiet
 Problems with school
 Fearful/anxious
 Aggressive acting out

What will happen?
The OPS School Counselor will refer the child to the SAFE Program. A SAFE Specialist will be assigned to work closely with the family and the school in focusing on family strengths and setting goals. The focus is on outcomes that can include:
 Organizational skills
 Social skill development
 Setting clear limits
 Anger management
 Positive discipline
 ■ Parenting education and support

The SAFE program:
 ■ Is voluntary
 ■ Is at NO cost to the family
 ■ Will meet with the family when and where it is most convenient
 ■ Will focus on family strengths
 ■ Is available through all OPS Elementary Schools
 Has served over 1000 families

If you are interested in learning more about the SAFE Program please contact your child’s principal or school counselor.

The Professional Partner Program and SAFE Program at Region 6 are similar. The only difference is the SAFE Program receives referrals from OPS Elementary Schools. The Professional Partner Program can receive referrals from anyone. See Professional Partner Program for more details.
